On-Publishing: Publishing Exclusively with Amazon...or Not

Wavin' atchya Fellow Writers!

I'm actually laughing out loud and shaking my head while typing this blog post. Why? Because I can't believe I'm actually doing this, let alone recommending it to all of you!

As we speak, I'm in the process of moving all of my books (all 36 of them) into Amazon's KDP Select Program, which means that none of my books will be available for at least the next three months on any other platform (such as Barnes & Noble, Kobo, Apple, Smashwords, Oyster, Scribd, etc.). Yep! I'm going exclusively with Amazon, for the time being.

I've been a bestselling author for six years, and I've been teaching writers all over the world during that time to publish on all platforms, advising them not to put all of their eggs in one basket, so to speak. BUT...THINGS HAVE CHANGED. That's no longer the most profitable avenue, at least not for me, and for many authors I know.

With Amazon's Kindle Unlimited Subscription Service, which allows Amazon readers to purchase for around $9.99 a month a plan that allows them to download millions of books for FREE (with 10 on their ereaders at any one time), readers aren't buying ebooks like they used to. They're subscribing, downloading and reading what they want, returning them and downloading their next ten books. This is especially true for fiction, and for some non-fiction as well.

For the last several months, I've made more money from the bonus that Amazon pays based on the number of pages of my Select books that have been read (I've had 8 books in there for the last year or so) than I've made on all the other platforms combined. Looking at that kind of math, moving all of my books to Amazon for the time being seems to offer me the best income opportunities.

This is one of the wonderful things about being a self-published author! I can look at these things and make these kinds of decisions as I need to. That's not possible when you're traditionally published with a large publishing house or published by a smaller boutique house.

This week, I moved another 10 books into Select and that means I've got another 18 to move over in the next couple of weeks. And, yes, I'll definitely keep you posted on my results.
